The Donald E. Simons Memorial Fund honors the life of Donald E. Simons, a 2001 graduate of Huron High School who excelled as a student athlete in high school and college. This Fund was established by his family to help student-athletes at Huron High School participate in interscholastic sports.
Donald E. Simons attended Washtenaw Community College, Eastern Michigan University and Ferris State University where he received a Bachelors of Science degree in Automotive Engineering and Performance Motor Sports in 2007. Don was one of the strongest, most powerful athletes in Huron High School’s history. He was recognized as the strongest athlete at the 2000 University of Michigan summer football camp. Don was named to the All-State pre-season first team defense and was named as the All-Area first team tight end by the Ann Arbor News. He was instrumental in leading his team to a nine-win, two-loss record.
As an Automotive Engineer, Donald did classified research and development on domestic, foreign and military vehicles. His automotive passion was reflected in his everyday activities. Don utilized his knowledge and creativity through his projects that ranged from vehicle maintenance to complete engine modifications.
Don loved his family and football. His passions were weightlifting and power performance cars. Don was honest, gentle in nature and stood for doing the right things.
Must be a student-athlete with financial need that is seeking support to help defray fees associated with participation in the interscholastic sports program(s).
- Completed application form and required documents listed on the application should be submitted to firstname.lastname@example.org.
- The Educational Foundation will then send the applications to the Athletic Director of Huron High and/or their Huron student counselor.
- After review by and recommendations from the above, the Simons family will make the final determination of the award(s), and notify the Educational Foundation of the award recipients.
Amount varies; typically four awards of $250 each
- Awards may be announced at a Huron High Athletic event. If no event is planned, then award packet will be sent to the students.
Checks will be sent to the Huron High School Athletic department for application to the Students’ account
Applications can be submitted starting on the first day of school to be considered for that year’s awards. All applications must be submitted by October 1, no later than 5pm.The Simons family will notify the Educational Foundation of the winner and provide contact information by October 15.
