2008 Accomplishments

The Ann Arbor Public Schools Educational Foundation has a long history supporting public education in Ann Arbor. As we evolve and grow, we are proud of our many accomplishments as a community non-profit organization. Following are some highlights from fiscal year 2008:

  • Exceeded fundraising goal of $200,000
  • Grants to teachers awarded - $33,500.  Traveled with Superintendent and Board President to each classroom to make award presentation to teachers and students.  Teachers awarded grants made presentations on outcomes in May 2008.
  • Large grant to Ann Arbor Public Schools distributed $45,000 for Initiatives for Excellence, specifically writing literacy programs in grades 5 – 9.
  • New funds established within the Educational Foundation
    • Jinrae Kim Memorial Fund – for social inclusion of ESL families
    • Peter Stamos Memorial Scholarship Fund – two scholarships for elementary students to attend fitness camps during the summer
    • Disabilities Awareness Workshops Fund – to promote and share experiences of students with disabilities in the classrooms
    • Karen Thomas Memorial Fund – promote literacy in elementary school with particular emphasis on low-income households
    • Madeleine Thompson Memorial Fund – for Humanities
    • Robin Wax Tribute Fund – honoring retired teacher
    • Bob Galardi Tribute Fund – honoring retired teacher/administer
    • Village Fund – to mitigate social exclusion in elementary schools (funds to cover costs of school photo’s for all students, yearbooks, t-shirts, lunch money for field trips, etc.)
  • Utilized graduate students from the University of Michigan in three separate programs:
    • Board Fellows – Two students from Ross School of Business MBA program serving as board fellows for one year; working on finance committee and alumni association committee
    • Community Consulting Club of Ross School of Business Evening MBA Program – conducted a community survey to set bench marks for awareness of Ed Foundation in the Ann Arbor community
    • U-M School of Information students in SI 501, “Contextual Inquiry and Project Management,” a 14-week client-based course at the University of Michigan School of Information, conducted a systems analysis and presented comprehensive report on “Using Data to Cultivate Contributions.”
  • Awarded more than 14 scholarships:
    • Alex Tons Scholarship
    • Kacee Cronk Scholarship
    • Kent Overbey Scholarships (3)
    • Robert Lewis, Jr. Scholarship
    • Taylor Calhoun Scholarships/Awards (3+)
    • Women’s Symphony Scholarship
    • Lisa Gallagher Memorial Scholarship
    • Evie Mavrellis Scholarship
    • Dorothy Russell Scholarship
    • Donnellan Fund Scholarships
  • Hosted an open-house for Realtors at the new Skyline High School.
  • Welcomed 200 new donors or event attendees to our organization.
  • Utilizing in-kind contributions and public service announcements, posted three billboards in Ann Arbor for one month, had AAPSEF “ads” on local radio stations for two weeks in the fall.
  • Had several teacher grant programs noted in the Ann Arbor News and Foundation updates noted in the Ann Arbor News.
  • Implemented AAPS staff payroll deduction program.
  • Conducted a visioning experience with ZingTrain and the entire board of the Educational Foundation.
  • Implemented a “Lawyers for Literacy” campaign within annual fund drive.
  • Conducted first annual giving campaign.
  • Renewed membership in National School Foundation Association.
  • AAPSEF joined Chamber of Commerce.
  • Made presentations to 3 PTO’s.
  • Engaged more volunteers in the activities of the Educational Foundation.
  • Budget for 2009 Fiscal Year includes $120,000 in support for the Ann Arbor Public Schools.
  • Raised $20,000 at annual Golf Outing supported by businesses and individuals.
  • Raised $20,000 at the first annual “Celebration of Innovation and Excellence in the Ann Arbor Public Schools.”
  • Board Development Committee nominated three new board members for FY 2009.  All fill needs in board "matrix of needs."
